Omak soccer shows great improvement

Omak High School’s soccer team closed out its season with three losses, but in each the Pioneers kept the score closer than it had been in the first meeting this season.
Omak fell 5-0 to Tonasket April 28 at home.
Cascade topped Omak 8-1 April 30, with Adam Hein scoring on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
After finishing fifth in the Caribou Trail League, Omak needed to beat Entiat (third place in the B’s) to earn a berth to the Tri-District tournament.
Entiat kept the ball on its own end of the field to win 5-0 May 2 at The Plex.
“In every match of our closing week we bettered our performances against these teams,” said coach Cindy Gagne.
Keeper Eric Olson logged 27 saves over the three games.
Seniors Matt Kraske and Travis Thornton put in outstanding defensive performances.
Jerromey Harris and Jose Diaz had several opportunities on goal in each match, Gagne said.
“Christian Behymer as a mid-fielder put in great performances, especially against Cascade,” she said.
Against Entiat, a possible goal by Jose Diaz in the second half was called back for an off-side call. Diaz sent a slicing shot from deep in the right corner that eluded Entiat’s keeper.
“We were not without our opportunities this week,” said the coach. “I am pleased in our tenacity, that we didn’t give up.”
